Is it OK to... Gatekeep Your Professional Network?
Why "just want to expand my network" isn't reason enough for introductions

Hey Kelly -
A connection reached out asking for an introduction to my former boss. When I asked why, they said 'just want to expand my network.' That's not a reason I'm comfortable with, but they're pushing back saying I'm 'gatekeeping.'
Am I being unreasonable?
Introduction Interrogation
Dear II,
It is more than OK to pause when someone asks for access without a fuller explanation.
An introduction is a handoff of trust. “Just want to expand my network” is a non-answer, and not a compelling reason to make an introduction IMHO.
Here’s the script to stop the pushback:
“I’m intentional with introductions, especially when it involves former colleagues. And my most valuable connections, really appreciate this approach. I’d be happy to revisit your introduction request if there’s a specific ask or reason you want to connect with [X].”
BTW. You’re not gatekeeping. You’re practicing discretion – and maintaining strong trust-bonds with existing network connections, like your former boss.
OK?
K.
