Your Inner Circle for Success

Curious about how The Social Billionaire can transform your network? Read on.

Your Inner Circle for Success

I'm really tired watching brilliant, driven women hit walls they shouldn't be hitting — and asking the wrong questions about why the outcome they were seeking didn't happen. The answer, almost every time, comes back to networking or more precisely, network strategy.

And this is why I wrote The Social Billionaire: A Networking Roadmap for Women Seeking to Flourish and Achieve More.

I want you to achieve the outcomes you're seeking.

In a series of Q&As, I'm pulling directly from the research, the frameworks, and the hard-won insights inside The Social Billionaire to answer reader questions — and dishing out the kind of honest, practical answers you'd get if we were sitting across from each other.

This is the second post in the series.

Q: How do I build a powerful inner circle for success?

A: The inner circle you need, will be unique to you.

An "inner circle" is a hand-picked group of like-minded, truth-telling career confidants who provide the strategic guidance and reputational extensions necessary to reach your biggest goals.

Key: your goals.

Who you need around your goals today, won't necessarily look like who you needed around last year's goals, or next week's challenges. Keep this mind as you think about constructing an inner circle.

Here is a short-guide step-by-step roadmap to building your powerhouse inner circle:

  • Differentiate Your Support Systems: Distinguish between your "Social-Emotional Squad" and your "Career Go-To’s". While your social squad provides TLC and nourishment for your soul, your inner circle should be comprised of strategic relationships that understand your professional drive and will offer unfiltered, "tough love" wisdom.
  • Prioritize Connections with Other Women: Research indicates that women’s career success is uniquely fueled by surrounding their ambitions with other focused, gritty women. Make networking with other women a non-negotiable priority versus a social, nice-to-have.
  • Diversify for Non-Overlapping Networks: To maximize your reach, avoid an "echo chamber" of alike contacts. Seek out "like-minded" peers who have distinct, diverse networks, and are willing to connect you into spaces you are otherwise excluded from.
  • Fill Gaps Intentionally: If your current inner circle or career tribe lacks specific expertise or contains too much "same same" in terms of networks, it's time to make changes. Seek out who you need to fill network gaps by joining leadership development groups, mentoring other women to create powerful peers connections, or specifically asking for introductions to the female experts you're seeking to meet.
  • Proactively "Tap" Your Tribe: Do not wait for your inner circle to guess what you need. Initiate the conversations on the topics you need to discuss. For example tap them for back-channel inquiries, to source intel on salary expectations, or to gain feedback on your profile-raising strategies.

By following this strategic framework, you transform your networking from a simple list of contacts into a wealth of social capital that compounds over time.
